The key is cultivating new goals and taking measures to move towards them. The motivational force of new goals eventually helps rewire the brain so that it has alternatives to the drive for drugs. It’s hard to leave addiction behind without constructing a desirable future. Relapse is a common part of the recovery process from drug addiction.

Ask yourself, will more lying, more isolating, and more of the same make you feel better? The expression in AA is – nothing changes if nothing changes. If you don’t change your life, then why would this time be any different?

An overdose happens when the person uses enough of a drug to produce uncomfortable feelings, life-threatening symptoms, or death. The chronic nature of addiction means that for some people relapse, or a return to drug use after an attempt to stop, can be part of the process, but newer treatments are designed to help with relapse prevention. Relapse rates for drug use are similar to rates for other chronic medical illnesses. If people stop following their medical treatment plan, they are likely to relapse. From 1988 through 2001, I was continuously abstinent from drugs other than caffeine, including alcohol. Since then, I have used alcohol and cannabis responsibly, without difficulty.

To save lives, overdose antidote should be sold over-the-counter, advocates argue

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one in 14 Americans reports experiencing a substance use disorder. Some people may use drugs to cope with stress, trauma, or to help with mental health issues. Some may develop an addiction after misusing opioids that have been prescribed by a licensed physician. Of course, for people steeped in traditional abstinence-oriented recovery, CRA’s “any positive change” definition can be challenging. In the 12-step world, members who have maintained continuous abstinence for many years are revered—the longer their time away from alcohol and other drugs, the higher their status tends to be. Granting the status of “recovering” to those who have not quit entirely seems unfair from this perspective.

Therapy and addiction recovery can help individuals restore empathy, compassion, and altruism that may have been lost in addiction. A key element that highlights the brutality of addiction is relapse. Unfortunately, relapse rates from addiction are extremely high, with approximately 85% of individuals relapsing within their first year of recovery from drugs or alcohol, even after completing a drug and alcohol rehab sober house program. As such, individuals in recovery take great pride in their recovery, as it is often one of the most challenging things they have done in their lives. In this way, recovery can teach the lesson that anything is possible if one sets their mind to it. Individuals in recovery know that they are not weak-willed individuals, but rather have just as strong of a willpower and mindset as anyone else, if not more.

The first step to overcoming drug abuse and addiction

Your role in their support circle is to help them if they slip, as well as giving them love and encouragement. Being in a close relationship with someone who is actively using alcohol or other substances can be very challenging. But saying things like, “If you loved me, you’d quit,” is damaging behavior that almost never works.

For over 20 years Dr. Umhau was a senior clinical investigator at the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). If you are in pain, it can be difficult to stay motivated to maintain control and stifle your addiction at that moment. If your addiction is to a prescription drug that relieves pain, ask your doctor for a referral to a pain specialist if you want to explore other options for pain control. When you write things down, it helps you to see the bigger picture.

Intensive support is often needed for recovery from addiction. When experiencing a craving, many people have a tendency to remember only the positive effects of the drug and forget the negative consequences. Therefore, you may find it helpful to remind yourself that you really won’t feel better if you use and that you stand to lose a lot.

Furthermore, being unable to reduce the frequency of their addiction or stop altogether implies “weak will” (although that is not true, please read #6). Due to a combination of such factors, addicted individuals often have low self-worth. But there are a few unhealthy behaviors or negative thinking patterns that have been getting you into trouble, and they will continue to get you into trouble until you let them go.

When you ride out the craving, without trying to battle, judge, or ignore it, you’ll see that it passes more quickly than you’d think. Talk to friends or family members about craving when it occurs. Talking can be very helpful in pinpointing the source of the craving. Also, talking about craving often helps to discharge and relieve the feeling and will help restore honesty in your relationship. Think of a sandy beach, or a fond memory, such as your child’s first steps or time spent with friends.

Taking care of your own physical, emotional and mental needs first will make you better equipped to help your loved one through the difficult journey of recovery. There are also many support groups for families that can provide care and community as you navigate this challenging role. Although hope may seem to be frivolous to some when it comes to battling a severe addiction, it is actually quite an important mechanism of change studied by many psychologists.
